UNDERSTANDING SCHEDULE PIPES

If the outer diameter (OD) is known, what is lacking to indicate the pipe size? namely the thickness or thickness of the pipe. In a pipe, the wall thickness is known as the schedule, which is usually shortened to sch.

The more pipes are used in high pressure and temperature, the thicker the pipe walls, the bigger the schedule. Which means, the smaller the internal diameter of the pipe, because part of it has been used for the wall thickness of the pipe. Usually known as 3 types of schedule, namely standard, extra strong (xs) and double extra strong (xxs).

The schedule value on the pipe has been determined by ASME, but the most visible difference is when stainless steel is used with what is not. For stainless steel materials, usually get an "S" suffix on the schedule. Stainless steel pipes are available in schedules 5S, 10S, 40S and 80S. Meanwhile, carbonsteel pipes are available in schedules 10, 20, 30, 40, 60, 80, 100, 120, 140, 160, STD, XS and XXS.

In general, the pipe thickness has schedule 40, which is the same value as the STD schedule for pipe 1/8 to pipe size 10 inc. Meanwhile, the Schedule Extra strong (XS) value with schedule 80 has the same thickness as the 8 in. Pipe, the pipe that is larger than that has the same thickness of 12.7 mm. While schedule XXS is bigger than schedule 160.
